The US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has proposed a ban on electrical stimulation devices used to reduce or stop self-injurious or aggressive behavior. The FDA considers these devices to present an unreasonable risk of illness or injury, including psychological risks like depression and anxiety, as well as physical risks like burns and tissue damage. The ban would apply specifically to devices used for self-injurious or aggressive behavior, and not to aversive conditioning devices used for other purposes. The FDA is accepting public comments on the proposal until May 28 before making a final decision.
